Job Description
If you’re the kind of finance professional who likes to know that the books are right, the recons balance and nothing is left hanging at month-end, this could be a really good move.
We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on Bookkeeper / Accountant to join a close-knit finance team within an established business operating in the mining and granite sector.
This isn’t a role where you’ll sit in one little corner of finance doing one repetitive task. You’ll take ownership across the accounting cycle, work closely with the Financial Manager and broader finance leadership, and be part of a busy environment where accuracy, pace and follow-through really matter.
It will suit someone who enjoys getting stuck into the detail, can work independently and isn’t afraid to follow up, challenge discrepancies or deal confidently with operational stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day accounting records and help ensure that the finance function runs accurately and efficiently.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining the general ledger and accurate accounting records
- Processing and reconciling bank accounts, credit cards and petty cash
- Preparing journals, accruals and prepayments
- Completing balance sheet reconciliations
- Maintaining the fixed asset register
- Taking the books through to trial balance
- Assisting with monthly management accounts
- Managing debtors and creditors
- Processing invoices, receipts and supplier payments
- Monitoring debtor and creditor age analyses
- Assisting with cash flow forecasting
- Preparing VAT reconciliations and assisting with VAT201 submissions
- Assisting with PAYE, UIF, SDL, EMP201 and EMP501 requirements
- Supporting payroll processing and reconciliations where required
- Preparing year-end schedules and supporting audit requirements
- Assisting with budgets, expense monitoring and improving financial processes
What we’re looking for
I’d love to speak to someone who has:
- A relevant bookkeeping, accounting or finance qualification, or strong equivalent practical experience
- Around 3–5 years’ experience in a similar hands-on accounting/bookkeeping role
- Proven experience managing a complete set of books up to trial balance
- Strong reconciliation skills
- Working knowledge of South African VAT and payroll-related statutory requirements
- Experience working on Sage Pastel
- Good Excel skills and confidence working with financial data
- Strong communication skills
- Experience with payroll software such as VIP Payroll, inventory, multiple entities or foreign currency transactions would be advantageous.
The person who will thrive here
Technical ability is important, but personality will matter just as much.
You’ll need to be:
- Accurate and detail-driven
- Proactive rather than waiting to be told what to do
- Comfortable working independently
- Confident enough to follow matters through until they’re resolved
- Resilient and comfortable in a high-volume operational environment
- Able to communicate confidently with management and operational teams
- Trustworthy, accountable and discreet
- Someone who enjoys being part of a smaller, hands-on finance team
This is a family-business environment with a strong work ethic and a very hands-on culture. If you enjoy being close to the business, taking ownership of your work and being part of a finance team where what you do genuinely matters, we’d love to hear from you.
